About Dr John Kennedy

Dr John Kennedy

John is chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at St Vincents Private Hospital in Sydney. He has held a number of senior positions in the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO), including two terms as federal councillor, and in 2004 -05 was chairman of the NSW branch of the College. He is currently on the executive of the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists.

John’s chief clinical interest is in cataract surgery, either as a primary or refractive procedure, and especially in high risk cases with other pathology, eg macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy. He sees patients with any eye problem, and works extensively with other ophthalmic sub-specialists if you need further referral.

He graduated in medicine at the University of Sydney in 1977 and commenced ophthalmology training in 1979 at Sydney Eye Hospital. Public hospital appointments have been associate ophthalmic surgeon at Sydney Eye Hospital, and visiting medical officer at Westmead Hospital (in charge of neo-natal intensive care ophthalmology screening 1985-2000), Westmead Children’s Hospital, and St Vincents Public Hospital (chairman of Dept Ophthalmology 1998 -2011).

Eye exam

He is a member of a number of ophthalmic societies in Australia, the USA and Europe, and in 2006 was elected as a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the UK. He is a member of the Australian, American, and European Societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

John participates extensively in registrar and student teaching, taking medical students from both UNSW and Notre Dame University. In 2007 he was voted Clinical Tutor of the Year at St Vincents.
